Trades Council have been asked to circulate details of the following event in taking place in Cambridge on 14th February as part of a global movement ‘One Billion Rising’. Details follow:
Dear brothers and sisters,
As part of the global One Billion Rising movement organised by the V(alentine’s)day movement the people of Cambridge will be gathering peacefully to “rise” through collective action and music to raise awareness about the fact that one in three women globally will be raped or beaten in their lifetime. This equates to one billion women.
In Britain, two women a week are murdered by their partner or former partner, many more are seriously injured, others suffer severe psychological abuse. The effect domestic abuse has on social services and mental health services is astronomical. Refuge and Women’s Aid estimate one in four women in Britain will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.
We believe the government needs to act now to change this through education; more funding for support services such as women’s refuges; better protection for domestic workers; the end to women being imprisoned in detention centres; more funding to tackle those trafficking women to the UK to be raped and tougher sentencing.
We would like to invite you to join us on Friday 14th February at 4.30 pm Petersfield – opposite Parkside Swimming Pool:
