Health workers in the NHS are on the front-line in the fight to protect all our health in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic
But despite the applause from Johnson, the Government is failing them. It was ill prepared as it refused to plan ahead for a pandemic like the one we are now experiencing. Even when it knew the outbreak was coming in February it did nothing. The price of the criminal lack of testing, protective equipment and ventilators is all too stark. Even before the crisis hit, NHS had been cut to the bone – with 100,000 staff vacancies, 17,000 beds cut – we were starting from a weak position.
We need our health workers to protect and look after us and our families. And they need us to speak out, organise, protest and demand that the Government acts now to urgently oversee a massive shift of resources – taking over firms if necessary to produce the equipment and testing facilities required, a wealth tax on the rich to provide new funding, allowing qualified migrant and refugee health workers to work immediately with guarantees about their future status.
Join the meeting to offer solidarity, and to hear from the frontline and from other key workers so we can organise the steps we need to get public health before private profit.
